ACUPUNCTURE & WRINKLES

Practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believe that wrinkles often reflect an imbalance in either the internal organs of the body or the emotions. The face is used as a diagnostic tool revealing information about the internal state of health. Major organs such as the liver, stomach, lungs, spleen and intestines are represented on the face and practitioners look at both the type of wrinkle and where it is to determine the best treatment.

CANCER RISK COSMETICS

A study carried out by the Environment Working Group (EWG) has published the results of a computer assessment of 15,000 cosmetics which found that 22% may be contaminated with a petroleum base that contains a cancer causing impurity called 1.4 Dioxin. The study is supported by recent product tests which revealed that 1, 4 Dioxin was found in products marketed for babies and children. An average of 57% of all baby soaps and 34% of all baby lotions contain this cancer causing chemical. The the biggest offender with an astounding 97% of all products on sale in the U.S are products designed to relax hair. HAIR ALERT!

Recent studies by the British Medical Journal have raised concerns about the dramatic increase in allergic reactions to hair dyes. The main ingredient para-phenylenediamine (PPD) is present in over two thirds of all hair dyes currently offered on the market.
PPD has already been banned in France, Sweden and Germany amid concerns of the alarming increase in dermatitis and similar allergies due to the affects of PPD.

With the increase in use among younger woman, studies have revealed that early exposure and longer use of hair dyes can account for the dramatic increase in allergic reactions, whether the reaction is a mild case of dermatitis on severe facial swelling the need for a more user friendly agent is becoming increasing sought after (as the risks became more obvious) younger woman will seek an agent that based on statistics that the number of younger woman using hair dyes has increased from 5% to 92% over the last 10 years.

SKIN CARE FOR DIABETICS

Impaired glucose tolerance is a pre diabetic condition that can frequently result in skin irritation and excessive dryness. Studies released from the National Institute of Diabetics, Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK) have revealed that people suffering from type one and type two diabetes are prone to serve dry skin conditions. In some more severe cases people have developed swollen cracked skin and rashes after resulting in sores which frequently become infected.

The NIDDK has recommended that people suffering from the effects of impaired glucose tolerance should follow these guidelines;

● Only ever use very mild soaps in warm water when washing.

● Use a good quality shielding lotion to help maintain the skins hydration levels

● Use skin care products with ingredients that will not compound dry skin conditions.

● Use a moisturizing routine to help restore hydration and alleviate symptoms of severe dry skin.

DRIVING SKIN CANCER RESEARCH

Scientists have concluded that we now have enough evidence to support the relationship between UV exposure and driving a car to skin damage.

Compelling evidence of the link between right sided skin cancers in patients and driving could mean that individuals need to take alternative measures of sun protection.

Dr Scott Fosko, chairman of dermatology at the Saint Louis School of Medicine said “Our initial findings confirm that there is a correlation”

His study supports renewed evidence that UVA rays can filter  through car windows. This is especially worrying in particular skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma and lentigo maligna which develop gradually over time.

The research was conclusive, fuelling concern about the future of sun protection. At some point car manufactures will need the address the problem  and change the standard non-laminated glass for a glass that will offer people greater protection from penetrating UVA rays.
