What are Essential Fatty Acids and why are they important for the skin?
EFA's form part of the acid mantle to protect against microbes and environmental damage. They keep the cell moist and reduce the amount of transepidermal water loss AKA severe dehydration that cannot be quenched by topical creams alone.
The three main omega-3 fatty acids arealpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is found mainly in plant oils sea buckthorn oil, flax seed and DHA and EPA are found in fish and other seafood.
How do you know if you need EFA’s?
If your skin presents as any of the following, you might consider introducing EFS’s into your skincare routine.
Dehydration
Barrier impaired
TEWL
acne
breakout prone
dry and flakey skin
reactive
red and inflammation
recently sensitised
